Sorong, (1/9) – Statistics Indonesia (BPS) of Sorong Municipality released the latest developments in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and inflation in Sorong Municipality for August 2026, as well as the Hotel Room Occupancy Rate (TPK) for July 2026. The Official Statistics News Release was delivered on Tuesday, 1 September 2026.

Head of BPS of Sorong Municipality, Tri Rotua Maulina Siagian, stated that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Sorong Municipality was calculated based on the Consumer Price Survey (SHK) conducted by BPS of Sorong Municipality in August 2026. “In August 2026, Sorong Municipality recorded month-to-month inflation of 0.15 percent, year-on-year inflation of 4.08 percent, and year-to-date inflation of 3.53 percent,” said Tri.


Monthly Inflation in Sorong Municipality Reaches 0.15 Percent

Tri explained that monthly inflation in Sorong Municipality in August 2026 reversed from the situation in July 2026, when the municipality recorded deflation of 0.26 percent. Meanwhile, compared with August 2025, Sorong Municipality also recorded inflation of 1.19 percent in August 2025.

“Over the past year, Sorong Municipality has experienced inflation eight times and deflation five times. The highest inflation occurred in June 2026, at 2.06 percent, while the deepest deflation occurred in February 2026, at 0.81 percent,” she explained.

Based on expenditure groups, the Food and Beverage Provision/Restaurants group recorded the highest monthly inflation, at 1.26 percent, with a contribution of 0.08 percentage points to inflation. Meanwhile, the Transportation group experienced the deepest deflation, at 1.12 percent, with a deflationary contribution of 0.12 percentage points.

The Food Beverages and Tobacco group recorded inflation of 0.56 percent, with a contribution of 0.23 percentage points. The Clothing and Footwear group recorded deflation of 0.17 percent, with a contribution of minus 0.01 percentage points. The Housing Water Electricity and Household Fuel group recorded deflation of 0.42 percent, with a contribution of minus 0.08 percentage points.

Meanwhile, the Furnishings Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance group recorded inflation of 0.32 percent, with a contribution of 0.01 percentage points; Health recorded deflation of 0.63 percent, with a contribution of minus 0.01 percentage points; Information Communication and Financial Services recorded inflation of 0.52 percent, with a contribution of 0.03 percentage points; Recreation Sport and Culture recorded deflation of 0.08 percent; Education recorded inflation of 0.18 percent, with a contribution of 0.01 percentage points; Food and Beverage Provision/Restaurants recorded inflation of 1.26 percent, with a contribution of 0.08 percentage points; and Personal Care and Other Services recorded inflation of 0.25 percent, with a contribution of 0.01 percentage points.


Tuna Becomes the Largest Contributor to Monthly Inflation

According to Tri, commodities making the largest contributions to month-to-month inflation in Sorong Municipality in August 2026 were predominantly fisheries commodities.

“The commodities contributing to inflation were tuna, at 0.46 percent; anchovies, at 0.08 percent; rice with side dishes, at 0.07 percent; mackerel, gembung fish, banyar fish, gembolo fish, and aso-aso fish, at 0.06 percent; and spinach, at 0.04 percent,” she said.

Meanwhile, the commodities contributing to monthly deflation were tomatoes, at 0.20 percent; air transportation, at 0.15 percent; scad/benggol fish, at 0.12 percent; shallots, at 0.10 percent; and household fuel, at 0.08 percent.

Tri stated that most commodities contributing to inflation in August 2026 were fisheries commodities.

“This was caused by extreme weather conditions and high waves, which resulted in lower catches by fishermen and consequently triggered increases in fish prices,” she said.


Annual Inflation Declines to 4.08 Percent

On an annual basis, Sorong Municipality recorded inflation of 4.08 percent in August 2026. This figure was lower than the 5.16 percent year-on-year inflation recorded in July 2026. However, compared with August 2025, which recorded inflation of 1.74 percent, inflation in August 2026 increased.

“When compared with July 2026, there was a decline, as year-on-year inflation in July 2026 stood at 5.16 percent. However, compared with August 2025, there was a substantial increase, as year-on-year inflation in August 2025 was 1.74 percent,” said Tri.

According to her, the increase in inflation in August 2026 compared with August 2025 was attributable to a surge in airfares.

Based on expenditure groups, the highest annual inflation occurred in the Transportation group, at 10.51 percent, with a contribution of 1.00 percentage points. Meanwhile, the largest annual contribution to inflation came from the Food Beverages and Tobacco group, at 1.48 percentage points.

The Food Beverages and Tobacco group recorded inflation of 3.80 percent, with a contribution of 1.48 percentage points. Clothing and Footwear recorded inflation of 0.20 percent, with a contribution of 0.01 percentage points. Housing Water Electricity and Household Fuel recorded inflation of 3.13 percent, with a contribution of 0.57 percentage points.

Furnishings Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance recorded inflation of 2.19 percent, with a contribution of 0.10 percentage points; Health recorded 2.99 percent, with a contribution of 0.05 percentage points; Transportation recorded 10.51 percent, with a contribution of 1.00 percentage points; Information Communication and Financial Services recorded 4.96 percent, with a contribution of 0.31 percentage points; Recreation Sport and Culture recorded 6.61 percent, with a contribution of 0.09 percentage points; Education recorded 0.17 percent, with a contribution of 0.01 percentage points; Food and Beverage Provision/Restaurants recorded 4.11 percent, with a contribution of 0.28 percentage points; and Personal Care and Other Services recorded 3.75 percent, with a contribution of 0.18 percentage points.


Air Transportation and Tuna Dominate Annual Inflation

Among the commodities contributing to year-on-year inflation in August 2026, air transportation made the largest contribution, at 0.80 percentage points. This was followed by tuna, at 0.72 percentage points; household fuel, at 0.36 percentage points; gold jewelry, at 0.21 percentage points; and cellular phones, at 0.18 percentage points.

Meanwhile, commodities contributing to annual deflation were shallots, at 0.21 percent; tomatoes, at 0.15 percent; cayenne pepper, at 0.12 percent; mustard greens, at 0.07 percent; and water spinach, at 0.06 percent.

Tri summarized that inflation in Sorong Municipality in August 2026 stood at 0.15 percent month-to-month, 4.08 percent year-on-year, and 3.53 percent year-to-date.

“The main contributor to monthly inflation in August 2026 was the Food Beverages and Tobacco group, with a contribution of 0.23 percentage points,” she explained.

The main commodities contributing to monthly inflation included tuna, anchovies, rice with side dishes, mackerel/gembung fish/banyar fish/gembolo fish/aso-aso fish, spinach, sea transportation, bananas, red snapper, cellular phones, and kuwe/cepa fish.

Meanwhile, on a year-on-year basis, the main contributors to inflation came from three groups. First, the Food Beverages and Tobacco group, with a contribution of 1.48 percentage points. The main contributing commodities included tuna, broiler chicken, mackerel/gembung fish/banyar fish/gembolo fish/aso-aso fish, anchovies, kuwe/cepa fish, rice, smoked fish, red snapper, red chili, and tongkol/ambu-ambu fish.

Second, the Transportation group, with a contribution of 1.00 percentage points, influenced by air transportation, gasoline, lubricants/engine oil, cars, motorcycles, diesel fuel, and freight charges.

Third, the Housing Water Electricity and Household Fuel group, with a contribution of 0.57 percentage points. The contributing commodities included household fuel, wall paint, corrugated metal sheets, house rent, plywood, cement, timber, reinforcing steel, and ceramic tiles.


Hotel Room Occupancy Rate in Sorong Municipality Rises in July 2026

In addition to developments in inflation, BPS of Sorong Municipality also released the Hotel Room Occupancy Rate (TPK) for July 2026. The data were collected through the Hotel and Other Accommodation Survey (VHTS), with a sample of 34 hotels in Sorong Municipality.

For star-rated hotels, the TPK in July 2026 stood at 44.25 percent, an increase of 1.67 percentage points compared with June 2026, when it stood at 42.58 percent.

“The average length of stay for guests at star-rated hotels in July 2026 was 2.02 days, an increase of 0.22 days compared with June 2026, when it stood at 1.80 days,” said Tri.

The average length of stay for foreign guests at star-rated hotels in July 2026 was 1.49 days, an increase of 0.27 days compared with June 2026, when it stood at 1.22 days. Meanwhile, the average length of stay for domestic guests reached 2.06 days, an increase of 0.23 days compared with June 2026, when it stood at 1.83 days.

For non-star-rated hotels, the TPK in July 2026 stood at 25.78 percent, a decrease of 0.57 percentage points compared with June 2026, when it stood at 26.35 percent.

“The average length of stay for guests at non-star-rated hotels in July 2026 was 1.07 days, an increase of 0.04 days compared with June 2026, when it stood at 1.03 days,” said Tri.

The average length of stay for foreign guests at non-star-rated hotels remained at 1.00 day, unchanged from June 2026. Meanwhile, the average length of stay for domestic guests increased to 1.07 days, up by 0.04 days from 1.03 days in June 2026.


Overall Hotel Room Occupancy Rate Reaches 37.98 Percent

Overall, the Hotel Room Occupancy Rate in Sorong Municipality reached 37.98 percent in July 2026, an increase of 0.79 percentage points compared with June 2026, when it stood at 37.19 percent.

“For the hotel tourism indicator in Sorong Municipality, the Hotel Room Occupancy Rate in July stood at 37.98 percent, an increase of 0.79 percentage points compared with June 2026, when it stood at 37.19 percent,” explained Tri.

The overall average length of stay for hotel guests in Sorong Municipality in July 2026 was 1.74 days, an increase of 0.16 days compared with June 2026, when it stood at 1.58 days.

For foreign guests, the average length of stay was 1.48 days, an increase of 0.27 days compared with June 2026, when it stood at 1.21 days. Meanwhile, the average length of stay for domestic guests reached 1.75 days, an increase of 0.15 days compared with June 2026, when it stood at 1.60 days

.

Thus, the development of hotel tourism indicators in Sorong Municipality in July 2026 showed an increase in the overall Hotel Room Occupancy Rate compared with June 2026, accompanied by increases in the average length of stay for guests in general, foreign guests, and domestic guests.
